Teaching on Your Terms: Become a Mrs Siegel Play-Based Tutor

3 min read

Mrs Siegel is opening expressions of interest to be a play-based tutor for children years pre-K to six

I left the school system but still carried my passion for helping children and teaching.

Creating Mrs Siegel was my way of reentering teaching on my terms: in a space I created, using a teaching style that I know works, and communicating freely with families who are desperately seeking answers to how their child can start to love learning.

Play-based private tutoring connects students' learning programs with play-based lessons, delivered from the safety of my home.

Play, confidence building, and curriculum alignment, help kids discover a love for learning.

This is the outcome that Mrs Siegel play-based tutors aim to achieve.

I invite you to join a network of Mrs Siegel play-based tutors across Australia.

This article explains what being a Mrs Siegel play-based tutor means and how it works for families.

Play Is Where the Magic Happens

Imagine a child arriving at your front door, backpack on, already excited about what today’s lesson holds.

They step into a space you've designed just for them: beautiful, warm, full of things to touch, build, and explore. For the next hour, it's just the two of you. You follow their thinking, meet them where they are, and watch them work something out through their own hands.

During the lesson something finally clicks and the child’s face lights up. You can’t wait to share it with their parents.

That's what private play-based tutoring looks like. And experienced teachers are extraordinarily good at it.

We Bring It All Together for Every Child

After every lesson, you communicate directly with the family - I use audio notes. You share what happened in the session, what clicked, what you noticed, and what comes next. Parents aren't left wondering, they're part of the journey.

But it doesn't stop there. Mrs Siegel tutors also connect with the child's classroom teacher and any other support professionals in their world, whether that's a speech pathologist, occupational therapist, or learning support coordinator. You take what each of them knows about the child and bring it into your sessions.

This is what makes the model work. A child receiving support from multiple people, all of whom are talking to each other, makes progress that none of them could achieve alone. Your role as a Mrs Siegel tutor sits at the centre of that.

Who I'm Looking For

The teachers who thrive in this model require:

  • A teaching qualification - you need to understand the foundation of school curriculums and lessons

  • A dedicated space at home - your home must cater to private lessons grounded in play, outdoors areas are frequently used

  • Availability outside school hours - most lessons take place before and after school

  • Genuine belief in play as a foundation for how children learn

Doing this role well requires teachers to be in it for the long haul, you should be able to children over many years.

I'm focused on regions across NSW but open to teachers across Australia, where families are actively looking for something better than a tutoring centre, and where a warm, locally-based tutor with a beautiful home space becomes something truly special for a child and their family.

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I live and work, the Gundungurra people, and pay my deepest respects to Elders past and present.

I recognise that First Nations people have been learning on this Country, teaching children through story, song, movement, and connection for tens of thousands of years.

This work of listening to children, making space for their strengths, and honouring their ways of knowing walks in the long shadow of that wisdom. I hold deep gratitude for it.
